Based on a Korean movie, My Sassy Girl, this show is about a guy who met an unusual girl on a train. She was very drunk and ends up throwing up on him. And thus starts their relationship.

Saburo is a marine biologist. The next day after his encounter with the girl, his childhood friend Minami comes to work (or perhaps study, or perhaps both?) at his university. Saburo sees this as fate. However, the other girl keeps on getting in the way.

I watched show and didn’t really find anything appealing about it. However, I knew that the movie was a huge hit, so I went and found it to see what the fuss was about. Watching my first Korean movie, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I found was a very enjoyable movie, some times over the top other times very funny. It had a good chemistry about it, and I really enjoyed it.

So I re-watched this episode, hoping to have a bit more appreciation of it now that I knew it’s history. Unfortunately, perhaps after seeing the movie, it made this show even less enjoyable. The magic formula that worked for this movie is definitely lost in this episode.

A lot of it felt very cheesy and fake. Just over the top acting but not in an amusing fashion. It was just a bit dumb, no other way to describe it.

I do appreciate the ways they tried to adapt the story line, but I feel like the marine biologist setting adds nothing to the story and the extra characters that are at Saburo’s work also add nothing. The inclusion of Minami as a character is good as it adds some extra tension that is needed to sustain the story line for a whole season. But apart from her, the rest are superfluous.

I really wanted to like this but it felt dumb and not funny. The girl just seemed an obnoxious drunk with problems - I felt like we never got to see what could possibly attract Saburo to her. Yes, I feel like I’m being harsh, and I shouldn’t compare it to the movie but treat it like its own identity, but I felt it really couldn’t stand up on its own at all.
