Let’s learn ひらがな！ Although, if you need this post, you probably can’t read that. It says “hiragana” of course.

I learnt hiragana through lots of writing - I preferred writing words rather than the characters in isolation. I also used the association method, where I pretended the characters looked like something else. This is from a hand out I got in class back in high school, when I first learnt Japanese (but then proceeded to forget), and it made relearning much easier. I also found that I hadn’t really forgotten some of the characters after all.

I’m sorry, but I do not know the source of this handout. If you know the source, please tell me, I will credit. I hope it is ok to repost it here, as I believe it will help people. And just to let you know, the original handout had pictures that helped you to visualise, but I don’t think it would be right to post them here. Please use your imagination, and perhaps come up with your own ideas!

Lesson 1 - あ to お。

あ - A
Looks like an antenna

い　- I
looks like two i’s. i.e. Hawaii.

う　- U
an old lady with something falling on her back, and she says “ooph!”

え - E
a “h” with an extra dot and line

お - O
looks like a flag on the 18th hole at golf, and the ball is almost on the green.
